The Baptist Health South Florida RN Residency is a competency-based structured transition-to-practice program provided in the Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall each year. The Baptist Health RN Residency offers the newly licensed nurse resident a structured transition to professional practice, incorporating the critical elements identified as essential to safe and competent care. They include a clinical preceptorship with trained and knowledgeable preceptors, debriefing opportunities, a mentorship workshop and didactic elements supported by realistic simulation activities.

The Baptist Health RN Residency was the first system-based nurse residency to be accredited, and with distinction, by ANCC PTAP in January 2015. By meeting the rigorous criteria established by ANCC, which is also the Magnet Recognition Program® designating organization, the Baptist Health RN Residency is validated as an evidence-based, comprehensive nurse residency program.

Applicants may select a particular hospital and unit as their preference, though placement is not guaranteed. Once accepted and placed, residents are expected to remain on their unit for one year after orientation. During their training, residents are evaluated using competencies mirroring Quality and Safety Education in Nursing (QSEN) competencies and the American Nurses Association’sScope and Standards of Practice.

Priority is given to applicants who are graduates of the Baptist Health Nurse Scholars Program, however, spots for non-Baptist Health employees are available each year based on site capacity and needs.

The vision for the Baptist Health RN Residency program is to on-board, train, and retain compassionate, safe and competent newly licensed nurses to provide high quality care with optimal patient outcomes for the populations served.

Baptist Health South Florida RN Residency is accredited as a Practice Transition Program by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation in Practice Transition Programs. The current sites included in this accreditation designation are: Baptist Hospital of Miami, Baptist Outpatient Services (specifically Doral Urgent Care. West Kendall Urgent Care, Miami Beach Urgent Care, Medical Arts Surgery Center at South Miami, Northpoint Surgery Center, and Off-Campus Emergency Center at West Kendall), Doctors Hospital, Homestead Hospital, Mariners Hospital, South Miami Hospital, West Kendall Baptist Hospital.
