The IRS issues more than 9 out of 10 refunds in less than 21 days. However, it's possible your tax return may require additional review and take longer.
Here are some common reasons for a delay: If the department needs to verify information reported on your return or request additional information, the process will take longer. Math errors in your return or other adjustments. You used more than one form type to complete your return.
For returns submitted electronically, taxpayers due refunds can expect them within four weeks of the submission date. For paper returns, the refund processing time is up to eight weeks. Taxpayers can minimize delays in receiving their refunds by updating their contact information with LDR.
If your state refund is taking longer to arrive than your federal refund, remember that each state has its own processing protocols and security measures, some of which may require more time than the federal process.
If you received a refund of state or local income taxes from last year's tax return, you may receive a Form 1099-G reporting this refund as income. If you itemized deductions on your federal return in the same year that you received the state or local refund, the refund may be considered taxable income.

Why can't I see where's my refund status?
You must wait at least 24 hours after you get the acknowledgment e-mail that your tax return was received by the IRS. Your e-filed return was accepted (received) by the IRS less than 24 hours ago. Wait at least 24 hours after acceptance before using WMR. Your return is still pending.
The refund tracker may not appear until we've completed our review of your tax return.

If you lost your refund check, you should initiate a refund trace: Use Where's My Refund, call us at 800-829-1954 and use the automated system, or speak with an agent by calling 800-829-1040 (see telephone assistance for hours of operation).
Day of the week for IRS refund deposits
The IRS typically processes tax refunds and executes direct deposit transactions within 21 days after accepting your tax return. It's common for the IRS to issue refunds on business days, from Monday through Friday.

"IRS employees are working hard to make sure that new funding is used to help taxpayers by making the process of preparing and filing taxes easier." Most refunds are issued in under 21 days, but the wait time will be longer for returns that require additional review, the IRS said.
Assuming no issues, IRS issues tax refunds in less than 21 calendar days after IRS receives the tax return. IRS has an on-line tool, "Where's My Tax Refund", at www.irs.gov that will provide the status of a tax refund using the taxpayer's SSN, filing status, and refund amount.

If your tax return is under audit, you will receive written correspondence in the mail from an LDR tax auditor with detailed information concerning your audit. An auditor may call you first to verify contact information. I have received a letter stating my tax return is under audit.
