Can you pick your roommate at CSU? ›

The CSU Housing Portal allows students more time and autonomy to choose their roommate(s), residence hall, floor, and room rather than being assigned by a computer program. This is particularly important when highly preferred locations fill and students must opt for their 2nd, 3rd, or other choices.

Students will select their room from available spaces during Room Selection Sign-Up. No need to provide a preference - the choice is yours based on what is available at your designated lottery time. You'll be able to see who selected into a space already and their roommate matching preferences.

UC Merced typically has singles, doubles, triples and quads as room-type options on campus. Students who signed contracts will receive an email to their UC Merced email account with roommate selection instructions. Roommate selection is optional.

Many schools allow students to choose their own roommates or request roommates before the start of the term. Some colleges, however, may assign roommates to all first-year students. Usually, roommate assignments are based on students' answers to questionnaires.

A handful of colleges do offer designated couples housing, usually for students who are legally married. Beyond that, if a couple lives in a standard gender-neutral dorm room, the relationship is their business (though resident assistants are usually pretty prepared for dealing with breakups and room reassignments).

To provide the opportunity for new students to meet new people and build new friendships, Stanford does not give freshmen and transfer students the option of requesting a particular roommate. You will learn who your roommate is, and your room number, after you arrive on campus.

Can I request a roommate or will UCLA Housing choose one for me? All students wanting to be roommates should update their application to reflect the requested roommate's information. We will take mutual roommate requests into consideration when making assignments.

To accommodate roommate requests, each student in the roommate group must have the same room type and learning community interests. If you do not wish to form a roommate group, Housing Staff will assign your roommate(s) based on your answers to the lifestyle questions indicated on the Housing Portal.

Once assigned, you may no longer search for roommates. If you do not make a request for a specific person, you will be assigned a roommate based on gender and building assignment. Once you have been assigned a housing space, you will be notified by e-mail. You can then log on to the portal to review your assignment.

Can you choose your roommate at Berkeley? ›

Within the Housing application, you'll be asked to answer questions that will help match you with a suitable roommate. You also may request roommates by creating a roommate group. The group leader will need to look up and invite each student using the Student Identification (SID) number.

The Harvard Housing System

All Harvard freshmen live in one of 17 freshmen dorms located in Harvard Yard. They are paired with roommates based on their preferences, which they enter on their roommate application form. For their remaining three years at Harvard, however, they will live in one of 12 upperclassmen houses.

Pristine views of the Rocky Mountain foothills, ample green space, historical architecture, and state-of-the-art facilities combine to make CSU's campus a place you won't want to leave. Our students spend much of their time outdoors studying, biking, or simply walking through the beauty.

CSU's newest set of residence halls, Laurel Village (LV) is comprised of three buildings: two residence halls and the Pavilion community center. Alpine and Piñon Halls house 615 first-year, upper-division, and transfer students, many of whom participate in the College of Natural Sciences Amplify learning community.

Many colleges allow students to indicate if they would prefer to live in same-sex, co-ed spaces, or gender-neutral housing, which means occupants can live in the same room regardless of sex, gender identity, or gender expression.

Preferred roommates are not guaranteed!

Students who are not selected for room selection are placed in our waiting pool. If you are selected to be pulled from the waiting pool, you will be randomly assigned to an eligible bedspace and will not be able to request a specific roommate.

But there are certainly college roommate horror stories out there that, usually, young people learn from. However, Pamela Paul says more and more often these days, students are not getting randomly assigned a college roommate. They're choosing them ahead of time.

Roommate selection: All confirmed students are given a timeframe to select a roommate on the Housing Portal. Room selection: Housing will complete all room assignments based on preferences indicated on your Housing Application.
