Pedro Acosta Calls MotoGP Australia the Hardest Race Mentally | Phillip Island 2025 (2025)

Get ready, MotoGP fans, because the Australian Grand Prix is shaping up to be a real mental marathon, according to rising star Pedro Acosta! He's calling it the toughest race of the year, and for good reason. Phillip Island is a unique challenge, and Acosta is ready to tackle it head-on.

Acosta, riding for KTM, is returning to the iconic Phillip Island circuit, a year after a less-than-ideal debut in the premier class. In 2024, a heavy crash in the sprint race unfortunately sidelined him before the main event.

This year, however, Acosta arrives with momentum on his side, fresh off a second-place finish at the Indonesian Grand Prix. He's optimistic that his KTM bike is performing better on the fast, flowing tracks that characterize this season's calendar.

"For sure, it’s the hardest race of the year mentally," Acosta admitted on Thursday. The track's layout, combined with the strong winds and the proximity to the ocean, creates a unique and demanding environment. "There are not many tracks in the world where you can go that fast next to the see with all that wind," he added.

Acosta is focused on enjoying the experience, despite Phillip Island not being his favorite track. He's encouraged by KTM's improvements on similar circuits, such as Assen and Silverstone. His goal is to build on his recent consistency, aiming for top-five finishes and avoiding the mistakes that marred his sprint race last year.

"Last year was not so fun to be a MotoGP rider here," Acosta reflected. He missed valuable track time and struggled to string together consistent laps. Wet conditions in the second free practice session further complicated the qualifying.

But here's where it gets controversial... With last year's winner, Marc Marquez, and other top contenders sidelined due to injuries, this weekend's race is expected to be highly unpredictable. This opens the door for Acosta to potentially secure his first MotoGP victory.

Acosta remains cautious, however. He acknowledges that his teammate, Brad Binder, was in contention for a win or podium finish in the previous year. "Let’s see how we can start the weekend," Acosta stated, emphasizing the importance of taking it one step at a time.

He plans to assess his feeling on the bike during the practice sessions, aiming to put everything together for a successful weekend. "Let’s try to put many laps together, let’s try to give our 100% and try to put everything together because it can be a good weekend for us. But, like I said, no expectations.”
