Flash floods and severe thunder and hailstorms have hit the southeast of the country, following news of an orange weather warning for several counties.

Wexford, Waterford, Carlow, Kilkenny and Tipperary are all under an orange thunderstorm warning until 8pm on Tuesday evening, while the rest of the country bar Co Kerry are under a yellow warning for thunderstorms until 10pm tonight.

People have taken to Twitter (X) to share dramatic footage of the storms, with Carlow and Wexford being heavily impacted — as some images include flash flooding and a hailstorm.

Meteorologist Alan O’Reilly from Carlow Weather shared footage from the storms, with a road near Clonegal in Carlow flooded by thunderous downpours.

One person managed to get a photo of dark clouds rolling in over Wexford, while another in Castledockrell shared a photo of an intense hailstorm in the area.

Another video, taken in Ballycarney, showed a flash flood in the area, while it has been reported that a whopping 26.6mm of rainfall hit Castledockrell in just one hour.

Motorists are being advised to take extra care on the roads, due to the risk of spot flooding, difficult travelling conditions, and poor visibility.

There is also a yellow thunderstorm warning for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Derry. The warning came into effect at 8am, and will continue until 9pm.

Setting the tone for the week ahead, cloud and isolated showers will become more extensive in the west and midlands and could even be accompanied by thunderstorms.

This low pressure will result indropping temperatures, fresh winds, and increased rainfall throughout the country.

Forecasters have noted that the outlook remained mixed for the coming week, with potential for the good weather to dominate once more.
