Ride along with a veterinarian through the eastern Illinois countryside. In the warm months, the corn and soybeans grow lush and green on either side of the road, and red-winged blackbirds perch atop cattails in the roadside ditches. The green trees growing along the creek bank will be rife with color in the autumn. Marvel at the idyllic timber pasture where our next patient is waiting to be treated. Or stand at the side of an examination table in the animal hospital as the vet treats cats, dogs, co*ckatoos, and snakes. In the subzero temperature of winter, with snow piled high along the road, you’ll visit a farm where a female sheep awaits a Caesarean section to remove too-large twin lambs. Kneel alongside the vet as you observe surgery in a building with no heat. Later, visit an exotic animal farm, with a zebra, fainting goats, and potbellied pigs, and watch as the vet performs pregnancy exams on four yaks.In the tradition of All Creatures Great and Small, this heartfelt and entertaining collection of stories celebrates the life of a country veterinarian who has nurtured and healed God’s creatures for the better part of his life. Packed with larger-than-life characters—both human and four-legged—Doc, I Needed You Last Night will appeal to animal lovers of all ages.

Dr. Day wrote an engaging account of his career as a country veterinarian. The writing style is excellent, efficient, and sufficient; it moves comfortably along and while explaining the things he encountered with his patients in enough detail to understand the issues, it doesn't bog down in medical terminology or wander off from the tale at hand. Dr. Day didn't get much into stories about his or others' personal lives, but his tales about treating pets and livestock conveyed his caring thoughtfulness and the owners' concerns. Dr. Day could be the American Herriott!

When I’ve read a few serious and emotional books, it’s time to relax with a country vet book. It will appeal to animal lovers of all ages.

A Life of an Illinois Country Vet This book is a dutifully written, accurately described life of a country vet in Illinois from the middle of the last century to the present. The writer is very matte of fact, and tells his tale like the scientist that he is. If you are looking for a lot of cuteness and cuddles, look elsewhere. But if you are looking for a lot of delivery stories, you came to the right place.

Enjoyable and Imformative I gave this book five stars because I enjoyed reading it and think that anyone interested in animals or veterinary practices would. There are a few detractors I think Dr. Day should consider:
- He occasionally uses words that most people are not familiar with (not medical terms, 75 cent words).
- There are quite a few grammatical errors.
- There was one error in logic.
Maybe the book was not carefully proof read.

Entertaining read Nice folksy writing. Provides an opportunity to share experiences with a vet who clearly enjoyed answering his calling. Doctor Day allows the reader to live vicariously as he recounts stories from his career as a country vet. I do not require that every book be on the level of say a War and Peace to consider my time reading a book to be well spent. Reading this book was time I considered well spent.

This was an interesting & quick read. Very enjoyable. I liked that it was a series of short stories. Enjoyed reading this vet's memoirs. I'll be looking forward to another book by this author.
