Kenya's Defence Cabinet Secretary, Hon. Soipan Tuya, joined forces with Kisumu Governor, H.E Prof. Peter Anyang' Nyong'o, to preside over a groundbreaking ceremony for the 10,000-seater Moi Kisumu Stadium. This event marks a significant step in the government's mission to modernize sports infrastructure and nurture sporting talent nationwide. The stadium's construction is part of a broader national agenda, aiming to invest in facilities that empower youth, promote healthy lifestyles, and foster social cohesion, all while positioning sports as a catalyst for socio-economic development.
Once completed, the stadium will boast state-of-the-art amenities, including roofed pavilions in the Western, Eastern, Northern, and Southern directions, a football pitch adhering to FIFA and CAF standards, and an eight-lane athletics track with a tartan finish, compliant with World Athletics regulations. The project will also encompass supporting mechanical, electrical, and civil works, such as fencing and ample parking, to ensure international standards are met.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD), through the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), is providing technical expertise for this project, following a directive from H.E. President and Commander-in-Chief, William Ruto. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the National Government and the Kisumu County Government, demonstrating a shared commitment to delivering high-quality infrastructure that supports sports development at various levels, from the community to the international stage.
Beyond its sporting value, the Moi Kisumu Stadium is poised to generate substantial economic benefits for Kisumu County and the broader Western Kenya region. During construction, it will create employment opportunities and boost local businesses. Upon completion, it will attract sporting events, stimulate sports tourism, and elevate Kisumu's status as a regional hub for athletics and football.
During the ceremony, the CS emphasized the government's dedication to timely project completion, ensuring it meets standards and stays within budget. She expressed gratitude to the Kisumu County Governor for the collaboration and assured continued MoD involvement to ensure a smooth project progression. The CS also highlighted other collaborative projects, such as the Kenya Shipyards Limited, where the MoD and Kisumu County have worked together to build and hand over six boats, five landing sites, with two completed and three ongoing.
The Kisumu Governor praised the initiative, describing it as the culmination of tireless diplomacy. He expressed appreciation to the President and MoD for honoring the bid and pledged the county's unwavering support throughout the stadium's construction. The Governor also noted the stadium's historical significance as the birthplace of many talented athletes, including Peter Dawo, and celebrated Nairobi's designation as the regional office for United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG-A), further enhancing Kenya's diplomatic standing on the continent.
