Colorado Fire Safety: EPSS vs PSPS — What Xcel’s Plan Means for You (2026)

Xcel Energy has announced that while no public safety power shutoffs (PSPS) are expected in Colorado, enhanced powerline safety settings (EPSS) could still lead to wind-driven power cuts. This decision comes after consulting with the National Weather Service, who indicated that conditions are unlikely to meet PSPS criteria. However, the company has warned that wind-driven outages remain possible and operational adjustments could be made as conditions warrant. These fire safety blackouts, implemented in the wake of the Marshall Fire, have impacted hundreds of thousands of customers on Colorado’s Front Range on at least two other occasions this season. The company has provided steps to prepare for a power outage, including setting your fridge and freezer to the coldest setting, turning off or unplugging electrical appliances, and designating a dedicated outdoor space for generators. Despite these precautions, some residents are purchasing generators to stay ahead of any future outages. The critical fire weather conditions will persist for the next three days for much of the eastern plains and the southern I-25 corridor, with Tuesday’s windstorm expected to be the most powerful out of the system. Xcel Energy has emphasized the exponential increase in wildfire risk over the last 10 years, attributing it to climate change. This system will also bring snow to the mountains early Tuesday, with travel impacts expected across most of the higher elevations. The company has encouraged residents to prepare for power outages and has provided resources for doing so.
