From December 1, 2025, Romanian citizens will be able to travel to the United States without a visa. Romania's ambassador to the United States said this, Dan-Andrei Muraru, on the television station “Digi24”. Muraru he explained that the official announcement of Romania's admission to the Visa Waiver program will take place in January 2024, and from December 2025 Romanians will then be able to travel to the United States without a visa. “There are only two years left before our country definitively enters the Visa Waiver Program. Of course we still have a long way to go, but as things stand now, we have confidence that this will happen,” Muraru said. The Visa Waiver program allows citizens of participating countries to travel to the United States without a visa for up to 90 days. Earlier this year U.S. senators Richard Durbin and Jeanne Shaheen introduced a bill recommending the inclusion of Romania in the visa waiver program.
The legislative initiative follows the visit of the two senators to Romania. “The bill on support for Romania's admission to the Visa Waver program is the strongest signal that Romania receives from the United States on this issue. Furthermore, the bill effectively underlines the need to accelerate the efforts of both governments, the United States and Romania, to take concrete steps in this direction,” he said last March Ambassador Muraru. Romania, Bulgaria and Cyprus are the only EU member states whose visas have not yet been removed by the United States. To avoid the US visa requirement, countries must have a visa refusal rate of less than 3 percent. However, the final inclusion of a nation in the visa waiver program, even after meeting all criteria, remains at the discretion of Washington
