I remember Phil being born at home. While Mum was upstairs giving birth to him, my dad was showing three-year-old me how to tie my shoelaces. Afterwards I stood by the cot looking down at my newborn little brother, but really I was still basking in the triumph of learning to tie my shoelaces. My sense of brotherly pride came along later.
Phil and I got on growing up, but we fought a little, as all brothers do. One of my more spiteful actions was to give him a co*cktail of Fairy Liquid, which I told him was a delicious liqueur — and he drank it. I was about seven and he was four or five. I was in the dog house big time
