Imagine this: You're backpacking through Asia, eager for adventure, when a seemingly innocent overnight bus ride in Cambodia throws you a curveball you never saw coming!
Eden Kelly, a spirited 26-year-old from Australia, experienced just that during her solo travels. She hopped on a sleeper bus, expecting a budget-friendly way to travel and catch some Z's. But here's where it gets interesting... she was in for a surprise!
Taking overnight buses or trains is a popular choice for budget travelers. It's a clever way to save money on accommodation while getting from place to place. But how far are you willing to go to save a few dollars? Eden found herself in an unexpectedly close situation. Upon boarding the bus, she discovered she was assigned to share a small double bed with a complete stranger!
Eden documented the experience on Instagram, sharing a video of the cramped sleeping arrangements. "Literally that's what you share with someone," she explained, showing the small bed. "And because I'm travelling solo, I share with a random [person]. Don't know what gender, don't know who they are."
In the video, she showed the man who was already in the bed. She then sat beside him, clearly uncomfortable. Eden described it as "one of the most awkward" situations of her life, laughing through her discomfort. She then sought refuge with a British couple she'd met earlier, hoping to escape the awkwardness.
But the story takes another turn! When she returned to her bed, her assigned bedmate had requested a move, leaving Eden with the entire bed to herself. "I'm offended, a little bit sad, but it's fine because now I get a whole bed to myself," she admitted.
But here's where it gets controversial... The comments section on her post lit up with opinions. Many questioned why the man from the British couple hadn't offered to switch beds with Eden.
Eden clarified that she'd only met the couple 12 hours before the bus ride, so the offer wasn't really expected.
Another commenter stated, "I would’ve booked 2 spots, ain’t NO WAY I’d share an overnight bus and a bed with a stranger."
However, one person offered a different perspective: "If someone came to the spot next to me constantly recording, including putting me on their video. I wouldn’t feel great about that, glad he could be more comfortable somewhere else."
What do you think? Would you have been comfortable sharing a bed with a stranger on a long bus ride? Do you think the man should have offered to switch? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
